It smelled new out of the package, but not a yucky chemical smell. It washed nicely with no remaining odor. When I first removed it from it's packaging, I wasn't sure how comfortable it would be, since it felt a little stiff (hence the "barrier"). But I was pleasantly surprised that it's not too stiff or noisy at all for sleeping on. I use mine with my favorite pillow case on top and have no complaints whatsoever. I'm so pleased with it that I just went back and ordered enough for all of our pillows, king size for us and standard size for the kids.
